New Instrumentation Company Formed From Three Well-known Names In Vacuum Technology

E. SYRACUSE, NY - 20 May, 2000 - Leybold Inficon, a leading supplier of vacuum instrumentation, today announced it will officially become a new company under the name INFICON on 1 July 2000. The new company, headquartered in Syracuse, New York, is created from the merging of Balzers Instruments (Liechtenstein), the instrumentation business of Leybold (Germany), and Leybold Inficon (USA).

More than 30 years of marketplace recognition has created a powerful trademark in the name INFICON, which now represents one of the largest worldwide suppliers of instrumentation for monitoring, analysis, control and plasma cleaning in the semiconductor, vacuum coatings, air conditioning/refrigeration, and industrial markets.

James L. Brissenden, President, said, "Becoming INFICON marks the completion of the merging of the instrumentation businesses of Balzers and Leybold begun in 1996. It also signals the final integration of product management, sales and manufacturing. All product lines, along with research and development, have been consolidated and streamlined at INFICON's three primary locations."

"The name INFICON gives us a single crystal-clear identity and instant recognition for everything we do" explained Brissenden. "By combining all our products and business units under one brand, we intend to communicate our sole focus on advanced instrumentation."

"INFICON will concentrate on the business we know best," he added. "Working closely with our customers to help them overcome process hurdles, seeing beyond the current technology horizon, and developing our core competencies so we can continue to offer intelligent products with superb value."
