California Certifies INFICON Portable Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer For Field Use

California Dept. of Toxic Substances certifies HAPSITE Portable GC/MS provides laboratory-quality analysis anywhere in minutes

SYRACUSE, NY? ? April 14, 2004: The State of California has now certified the INFICON HAPSITE™ Portable Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) as a field and laboratory instrument for the measurement of toxic materials and chemical agents. This certification validates HAPSITE as an accurate, laboratory-quality instrument for field use, displacing the commonly held concept that a field instrument is practical only as a screening tool. It is especially useful in the areas of environmental investigation and remediation.

The California Environmental Protection Agency?s Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has the responsibility of certifying the performance of hazardous waste environmental technologies under the California Health and Safety Code. A Memorandum of Understanding with New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania means that these states recognize and validate the certification of the HAPSITE technology for regulatory use in their states as well.

In its certification, the California DTSC stated that ?with the advantages of fast on-site analysis, the INFICON HAPSITE significantly improves the sample turnaround time to generate data in a timely manner for the protection of public health and the environment.? Previously, environmental professionals and emergency responders often waited days or weeks for laboratory results to learn what volatile organic compounds were present, and in what concentrations. HAPSITE delivers reliable results in minutes.

The U.S. military, and state and city emergency responders in many other countries also rely on HAPSITE for emergency response, security, and other applications.

Since 2002, the U.S. Department of Defense has made HAPSITE purchases totaling $19.2 million. Various DoD organizations such as the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and U.S, Marines use HAPSITE extensively for security and emergency response applications during combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Additionally, National Guard Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Teams, use the product as well at high-profile events such as the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, a presidential inauguration, the World Series, and the Super Bowl.

?This certification is a significant validation of our innovative technology,? said Lukas Winkler, president and CEO of INFICON.?We?ve always felt that HAPSITE would prove itself to be the ultimate tool for fast and easy on-site analysis. This certification now confirms it.?

The certification is based on a comprehensive evaluation conducted by the Hazardous Materials Laboratory in the California DTSC.
